Scientific Discovery
The Jamieson Marine Geology Laboratory investigates hydrothermal processes at and below the ocean floor. Our research focuses on marine mineral resources, deep sea exploration, and seafloor mapping.
Our work integrates innovative exploration and mapping technology with analyses (petrographic, geochemical, stable isotope, and geochronological) of geological samples such as hydrothermal precipitates collected from โblack smokerโ hydrothermal vents. We investigate ore-forming processes on the seafloor and the interactions between geological and biological processes at both active and inactive hydrothermal vent sites.

SuBastian: the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). This expedition relies entirely on this ROV to map, explore, and sample the seafloor.
Happy Halloween from the Falkor (too)! ๐

Congratulations to Bettina Bourque for receiving the Faculty Plaque in Geology for the highest standing in the honours bachelor in geology, at the spring 2026 convocation two weeks ago. Bettina is a new MSc. student in the Jamieson Marine Geology Lab, working on the characterization and 3D modelling of a seafloor massive sulfide deposit.
